RE: English chatting room
About this matter,i completely agree with you. There is a saying:" Vietnamese students know a lot, they know everything, but actually they know nothing." It seems like some dudes in the ministry of Education want us to know everything,to become genius, prodigies, they want to cram us.For example,we are taught some "bullshit" subjects such as Agriculture or Industry....Another thing is that we are not allowed to be creative,to think in our own way in general(may be not in PTNK).But what is the basic aim of education?According to some teachers in PTNK,the responsibility of educators is to show the learners the way to learn,to discover things,to be creative, not to be a photocopier.

I have another question for you, when did you started learing English? Thinking

I started to "know" some english at grade 3 at school. I started to LEARN english at grade 5, after reading Love of life by Jack London and The gift of the magi by O'Henry.
The negative side of my English learning is that I am very bad at speaking and listening.

@ bestnmtuan: i thought u had exaggerated a bit (just my opinion) or you must love JL and O'Hẻny to death! Studying a new languague just 'cause you wanna understand some great works. It is really good! But the fact that u were only 11 at that mean time, r u sure it is the main factor why u study English? I could have not been that thoughtful and mature if I were you. But think again, if JL and O'Henry wrote in Hebrew, were u willing to learn Hebrew (just curious). No offence was meant!!!
@ deco: thank God that I did study Technology in high school, it help a lot here!!!

In fact, it was not English the very first language I wanted to learn. When I finished The count of Monte Cristo, the first novel I read, French was the one. However, living in a very small town like I did, without Internet and computer there, the range of books I could buy was limited too, I had had no chance to do that. Then, I finished Romance of the Three Kingdoms and wanted to learn Chinese, again, no chance. English was chosen simply because it was the one I had been able to learn with enough documents and so on.
You may have not understood my situation; when I was a small boy, my means of entertainment was just reading and reading, I did not like TV or films (and I still not like them now) very much, I did not have computers or video games. Reading and growing up, those used to be all what my life included, at least until when I got to grade 7.
Oops, talking about all this just makes me want to horn my time-managing skill so that I can learn another language Big Grin. If I has not been outbidded module LAG1201 Frown,... Maybe next semester...

oh i see, so it was like reading is the only thing you can do when you were young then that's why you are so good at literature [jealous]! I love your chidhood, really, it was absolutely in the book Smile BTW, I don't think that you quite got my point, I meant it was not you could learn what you liked. For example, it was French that you loved to study at first place but then see what got you studying English! For this case, you even didn't have a chance to choose but thank God you found JL and O'Henry who encouraged you to study English! Just for my curiousity [again], if you had been born and lived in a big city, say HCMC, would have you studied French? Once again, ìf I were you I would not do this either. Back to the main point, English is the world language. I could not study French 'cause not many people speak French. Is it because you loved English works then you studied English or it was much more convenient and helpful that made you studied English? Once again, if you had liked a Hebrew work so bad and, let say, Hebrew was so easy for you to have a chance to learn. Would have it been Hebrew what you had learnt? Or say, you didn't like any English work at all. Did you still study English???
FYI, I am taking LAG1201, pretty cool! Some guys in my lecture group told me that they had bidden more than 1000 pts for LAG1201, no doubt SDE freshmen cannot get in Frown
@ deco: I am studying kinda the same stuff in high school, drawing and reading tech-paintings, it really helps me! Some people even say that this is the only module they still understand Laughing

RE: English chatting room
It means somewhat like "self", the Vietnamese word closest to it in meaning is "ngã".

RE: English chatting room
Sorry guys I've been away with my service group for the past 5 days. I should like to thank all of you for your overwhelming responses. The information which you have given me is immensely useful for my essay. I just hope my reply does not come too late since you have already changed to a new topic. But thank you again for your support. I really appreciate it.
To bestnmtuan: I did a novel titled The Outsider in the litterature course for my IB Diploma. It was written by the great French humanist and a nobel prize winner for litterature, Albert Camus. I think it was very well-written. I recommend this novel to you because you have got such a passion for litterature. You can find the original book written in French called L'Etranger.
To deco gonzalez: I recommend this novel to you too. But DO read it in French. Maybe you will have changed your attitude towards English (or French for that matter) after you've gone through the book. You will love it anyway.
Regards
